Modalert vs Waklert – Is One Superior to the Other?

If you are into Nootropics, chances are you have already heard of Modafinil. Did you know about its newer, more potent brother, Armodafinil? Maybe you did. Studies and clinical trials show that Armodafinil is twice as effective. But is this really the experience users have? It is Modalert vs Waklert—the definitive guide to choosing the Nootropic for you!

What Is In Those Pills?

Modalert and Waklert are Sun Pharma products. Most Modafinil vendors offer either Sun Pharma or HAB Modafinil.

Both companies are based in India where the patent regulations allow for cheaper production. Sun Pharma has been in the game for longer. Arguably, they are more experienced and their factory is larger. This does not necessarily mean their drug is better but it does make them a newbie favourite.

Sun Pharma has had years to develop and improve their technology. It is much easier to trust them (although I have met people who swear by HAB).

Modalert tablets contain 200mg of Modafinil. Waklert has 150mg of Armodafinil. Although the dosage is different, Waklert can often produce a stronger effect. Let’s see why:

Modafinil vs Armodafinil Chemistry

In chemistry, we call compounds that are mirror images of each other enantiomers. Depending on the functional groups, we have a left and right enantiomer. Although both enantiomers have the same exact structure they have different biological properties. This is a big deal with drugs where literally all of them are damaging to your liver and/or kidneys. You want your medicine to be as biologically active as possible. This way you can

This is a big deal with drugs where literally all of them are damaging to your liver and/or kidneys. You want your medicine to be as biologically active as possible. This way you can get the benefits from a lower dose and limit the toxic damage.

Modafinil is a mixture of both enantiomers. Armodafinil (or Waklert) contains only the more active one. Bear in mind, that there is ongoing research on how exactly these compounds work. The basics we know by now are:

  • They are wakefulness-promoting agents.
  • They also have mood-enhancing properties and they improve cognition.
  • Armodafinil works at a much lower dose, although both have similar half-lives and peak plasma concentrations. That means they are absorbed and eliminated at the same rate but one is stronger. Which leads us to believe that the r-enantiomer (in Armodafinil) is the one we should love.
  • Both inhibit dopamine reuptake. They raise the levels of dopamine in your brain. They also bind to dopamine receptors.
  • Apparently, neither Modafinil nor Armodafinil are typical stimulants. Although they affect dopamine receptors and transporters, they do not cause the harmful effects of amphetamines (which also affect dopamine)

Does any of this mean we understand the drugs? Not at all. There is a reason Modafinil is a controlled substance in the US – we simply don’t know a lot about it, yet. The results so far have been overwhelmingly positive.

They also suggest that Armodafinil is more potent. When it comes to long-term effects, though, we can’t know for sure. Modafinil has been around longer. We don’t know about the possible long-term consequences of using just the r-enantiomer.

Modalert vs Waklert

Modalert vs Waklert—Dosage

Modalert comes in 200mg tablets. We have an article here on the blog on dosing Modafinil. Basically, 200mg are more than enough and even 100mg work pretty well.

Waklert is twice as effective as Modalert. Meaning that the 150mg of Armodafinil it contains should work as 300mg of Modafinil would. Generally speaking, both Modafinil and Armodafinil can stay active in your system for up to 15 hours. Larger doses last longer. For a wakefulness-promoting agent, this means that you will not be able to fall asleep.

Of course, it has been established that there is no need for compensatory sleep when you are taking Modafinil/Armodafinil. In reality, though, it is not a brilliant idea to be skipping hours of sleep. Sleep and its effects on cognition are not yet fully understood. Although we have enough evidence to claim that being behind on your zzz’s is not a problem if Modafinil is in the picture, we can’t know for sure.

Bottomline? If you want great cognition, better be extra cautious about getting enough sleep.

Waklert, with it’s 150mg dose of Armodafinil, is much stronger than a 200mg Modalert. If you take it too late in the day, your sleep and sleeping pattern might get disturbed. If you want to be asleep before midnight, you can only take the Waklert until 8:30-9AM.

First Time Users Beware

Now that I got your attention:

You build up a tolerance to Modafinil (and Armodafinil).

We have a full article on this issue, too.

Over time, especially if you don’t take measures to prevent it, you will need a larger dose for the same effect. For that reason, you always want to start small. People have gone as far as micro-dosing Modafinil. While I have my doubts about whether this works, it is a smart strategy.

You want to start with and stick with the lowest dose that gives you the effect you want. For Modafinil, this could mean splitting the pill and only taking 100mg.

Waklert does not really give you that option. It is best reserved for those who already use Modafinil and know how it affects them. Otherwise, you can develop a tolerance very quickly and to a fairly large dose of the active compound.

As you can imagine, there are plenty of reasons to want to avoid this. A larger dose possibly means more side effects, it strips you of the control you have on your intake etc.

If you are only just beginning to explore nootropics, stick with Modafinil at first. Once you get a feel of how it affects you, you can be better prepared for the strong stuff.

Modalert vs Waklert In Real Life

So far we only talked about the science behind Modalert vs Waklert. But I am guessing you are not just taking them for the love of scientific experimentation. Let’s look at how they differ in real life.

First off, Modalert and Waklert are more or less the same compounds, so the main effects are similar. They keep you alert and very focused on the task at hand. It is easier to avoid procrastination. In fact, there is practically no way for you to procrastinate.

The downside is, whatever you focus on, might not be what you should be focusing on. Modafinil makes it harder to decide priorities. Suddenly, whatever the job is it becomes extremely important. That is why I strongly suggest making a to-do list before you take the drug. Otherwise, you might end up wasting the high.

Time To Take Effect

There is no real Modalert vs Waklert here. Both take roughly the same time. It depends on your metabolism and a bunch of other variables, but generally, it is around 40 minutes to 1 hour. Take it on an empty stomach as food slows down absorption (but it does not lower the amount absorbed so you are getting your money’s worth either way).

First Few Hours

These are the hours before the drug reaches its peak concentration. There will be no noticeable rush. Rather, they both take effect gradually.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that Modafinil makes you more sociable (only on work-related matters) during the first hours. You are more energetic. Armodafinil, on the other hand, simply increases your focus. You become more and concentrated on the task. There are also less feel-good hormones and more sheer determination.

Peak Concentration

In a fasted state you would reach peak concentration around the 2-2.5 hour mark. To each body its own, though. It might take you up to 4 hours to feel the full effect of Modafinil/Armodafinil on you.

Modalert tends to make you a bit euphoric around that time. Yes, maybe euphoria is a strong word. It is rather a feeling of enthusiasm about whatever it is that you are doing. You will be on top of your game and very much aware of it. The feel-good hormones and the increased focus will work wonders. They are especially useful if you have a meeting or a presentation. You will be your best, most convincing and charming self.

With Armodafinil, the effects on mood are not as noticeable. Your concentration and determination will peak, though. Say you are powering through a study session and you don’t care for increased sociability. Waklert is the choice for you.

Coming Down

Although both hang around for 15 hours, there are some differences as to the way you come down. In general, Modafinil is more manageable. You can choose to relax or you can decide to keep working during the last hours of its’ effect. If you are done and you want to have a normal evening, a nice tasty meal will get you down pretty quickly. You can even try taking a nap but that will not always be possible.

Waklert gives you less control. Except for the last 1-2 hours, you will stay concentrated and relaxing will not seem appealing at all. That is perfect if you know you have a lot to get done. On the other hand, it also requires a little more planning ahead. Don’t make plans for the night because it will feel like a time waste and you will not enjoy them as much.

Modalert vs Waklert: Closing Remarks

Because both drugs are so similar, the differences described above might be much more subtle. Ultimately, it is about discovering what works for you. Modafinil vendors have great trial packs that can help you with this!
