Modafinil vs Adderall: The Nootropic Heavyweight Fight
Modafinil vs Adderall—the ultimate focus showdown. The question is—who wins?
Obviously, Adderall is much more mainstream. It’s pretty much prescribed to any adolescent who lacks any sort of focus. While I have my own opinions on this matter that are probably best left un-said here—the point stands. Everyone knows about Adderall. It’s perfectly “legal” to get via prescription, and it’s seen as heroic for putting your child on it whether they need it or not.
On the other hand, Modafinil is also available via prescription, but you can buy Modafinil online. Not the case with Adderall.
Having tried both myself, I thought I’d weigh in on the hot debate about Modafinil vs Adderall—and declare a winner.
So, let’s get started.
Adderall is made of two stimulants—Amphetamine and Extromphetamine. Try to say those both three times fast. Combined, they form Adderall. If you’re in the United States, it’s classified as a Schedule II prescription drug.
Of course, most people know of Adderall as the “cure” to treat ADHD and ADD. It’s also a college students best friend, allowing procrastinating students to cram entire semester’s worth of studying into one or two nights, while just forgoing the idea of sleeping.
It improves cognitive function, improves focus, and simply makes you wake and alert.
It’s also relatively “easy” to get, especially when you’re young. Just go to your doctor and moan that you can’t focus on anything, and you’ll likely walk out of their with a shiny new prescription to pick up some Adderall at your friendly neighborhood pharmacy.
I took Adderall in college on occasion—and it’s absolutely true. The stuff is completely potent. When I hadn’t studied for my accounting final at all (despite telling myself for three weeks in a row that I would), I was getting desparate. I had only two days left to learn an entire semester’s worth of material.
One of my friends had the Adderall hook up. Knowing my only alternative was to flunk the final (and therefore the semester), I figured I’d give it a go.
Two pills on two straight nights was enough to earn me a solid B on the final, passing me through the semester. I felt completely “cracked out” those nights, but in a good way. I was just in such a zone. The numbers all made sense. They lined up perfectly. They made me feel like my cognitive abilities were absolutely limitless.
Modafinil vs Adderall—The Downside
I wasn’t kidding when I said that Adderall is like crack.
While I certainly don’t condone the use of cocaine, I want to use it to illustrate a point here. Most of you reading this (hopefully) don’t take cocaine regularly.
Therefore, it’s safe to say that snorting some white powder is…an event?
Yeah, it’s a big deal to do cocaine. But, if you’re not using Adderall as a prescription method, but instead, to get an edge—guess what. It’s like an event every time you take Adderall.
You can’t have a life full of big events all the time. You simply burn out. The effect of Adderall is so powerful for some that it simply makes you crash (especially if you haven’t had a hearty meal like steak and eggs).
This brings me to my earlier point about how nearly all children are given this drug, for something as simple as being bored in class. It’s really freakin’ powerful. And we’re pumping 7 and 8 year olds full of the stuff?
There is no in between with Adderall. Some people take Adrafinil or Modafinil and say they don’t feel the effect. Nobody ever says that when they’re cracked out on Adderall.
At the end of the day, it’s simply hard to keep taking Adderall as a performance enhancer every single day. It’s just not sustainable over the long time. On the other hand, Modafinil is a more mellow high and focus. You don’t feel quite as cracked out, which makes it much more suitable for a day-to-day Nootropic than Adderall—I’d also put Kratom in that category.
So, let’s talk about comparing the two, directly.
Comparing Adderall vs Modafinil
Modafinil = control.
Or, just not as cracked out.
It’s just less. You will have a degrade in quality as far as your focus, and probably your output. But it’s a fair trade-off,given that it’s an easy comedown, and simply easier on your mind and body overall. Think of it as being more efficient in the grand scheme of things.
Personally, I’m just as efficient on Modafinil vs Adderall—especially when it comes to writing. Creativity is a breeze. Writing a post like this is done in well less than an hour. I just put on some good tunes, and off I go. I feel calm and efficient, instead of frantic scrambling like when I take Adderall.
Whereas “illegal” Adderall might get you into a heap of trouble, Modafinil isn’t. It’s even legal in many countries throughout the world. It’s also easy to get a prescription for it, if you’re so inclined.
(Side note, in regards to Modafinil vs Adderall—you can’t get Adderall without a prescription. It’s just not gonna happen.)
Final Thoughts on Modafinil vs Adderall
From a longer-term perspective, I have a hard time recommending Adderall. Maybe if you’re got a real important deadline, or a huge exam to cram for. If that’s the case, I’d give it the nod.
But from a day-to-day productivity standpoint, I would choose Modafinil any day. Whether it be for consistent studying, building a business, or just being more productive, it’s by far the better-rounded Nootropic.
In conclusion: Try both, but for specific purposes. And remember to consult with your doctor, as I am not one 🙂
