Finding the Proper Kratom Dosage
After daily use of Kratom for several years, I have mostly positive things to say about the substance. But it’s not all roses—if you’ve read my post about overdosing on Kratom, you’ll know exactly what I mean by this. Let’s talk about what NOT to do, and also how to find the proper Kratom dosage.
The first time I took Kratom, it was a mellow high. It very much reminded me of Adderall—great focus, but without the feeling of being SO on like I tended to get with Adderall. If you need a deeper explanation of this, read my Modafinil vs Adderall post. Kratom tended to make me less of a crack addict, and simply happier and in a better mood. This is with a smaller dose of about 2.5 grams of Kratom, spread across four or five hours.
However, I didn’t learn my initial lesson from the first time I took Kratom and overdosed.
One day, I decided to up my Kratom dosage and see what happened. I ended up taking five grams of a faster Kratom strand, and it knocked me on my ass. Again.
After about one hour, I started to feel completely nauseous.
After an hour and a half, I realize how bad I’m starting to feel. While he encouraged me to take Kratom on an empty stomach (and I’m a fan of intermittent fasting)—I knew food was going to be a necessity unless I wanted to keep going downhill.
After 2 hours, we finally got to a pizza place where I began to devour an entire pizza myself. Don’t ask me about the car ride getting there—it was misery, too. So much for low carbs…
Then I realize I can’t eat. Note I said “began to devour”.
Well, after one piece…the nausea started to get worse. I had to just nipple the rest of the pizza at a turtle’s pace to even keep it down.
Finally, after walking around the beach for another hour or so, I start to feel better.
But it wasn’t until the next day that I felt totally “normal” again. For the rest of the evening, I still had mild bouts of nausea, still had a bit of a high, and just did not feel well. I didn’t talk to any girls that day, nor did I become some productivity powerhouse. Instead, I was turned off what I later learned was a wonderful substance.
My choice to attack Monday and take those five grams was a terrible idea. I was having deja vu—something I thought wouldn’t happen.
So, What *Is* The RIGHT Kratom Dosage?
Yeah, second time was the charm. I decided I truly needed to never experience that feeling again, and promised myself I’d be far more cautious with my future Kratom dosage. I’ve been successful in this endeavor, as I haven’t had any other issues with taking too much Kratom (or any other Nootropic).
While you can take it on an empty stomach, and I’m a fan—it’s also been noted that food can help to process the Kratom. I would encourage you to experiment with both methods—but for most people, food will “mellow” it out for you.
If you’re a beginner to Kratom or Nootropics in general, I’d say do it on a full stomach the first time. This will help you dial in your proper Kratom dosage without, well—overdosing.
In addition, make sure to stay hydrated. It’s just like alcohol—too much booze and not enough water will make you feel terrible. Kratom tends to dehydrate you, must like Modafinil, so make sure you stay on top of your hydration from the get go. A good rule of thumb that I try to follow is, “Drink before you’re thirsty, not after.”
- Start with a dosage of 2 grams.
- If you feel nothing, up it by 1 gram and try again the next day.
I’ve read sites where they advocate for new users to take up to 6 grams their first time! This is ludicrous to me. Even with my tolerance to Kratom if I took that much I would without question get sick.
I’ve seen some people recommending 6 grams for a first-time Kratom dosage.
Don’t do it.
Start Small & Grow
Better safe than sorry, right.
With all of the current legal battles going on with Kratom, the last thing the “community” wants is horror stories of people taking too much. So start small and work your way up to a larger Kratom dose. Failure to do so can leave you with a nightmare on your hands.
Some people have different experiences with Kratom. Some need 5g to feel anything—but this won’t be most. But yes, it takes time to “dial it in”. It also is dependent on how you want to use the Kratom (pain relief, sleeping, productivity, etc.).
The point is, your mileage is going to vary—don’t take my advice as an end all, be all. Instead, use it as a jumping off guideline and fine tune it to your individual needs and preferences.
Bottom Line: Kratom Dosage
Don’t give up on Kratom. Just take the time to do it right.
Final thought: Kratom is not a MIRACLE DRUG. No drug is. It can help you become more social. It can relieve pain. It can help you sleep. Everything is possible, but don’t think it’s God’s gift to mankind. That’s just asking for disappointment.
